Freeman enlisted in the Royal Engineers for service in the Great War of 1914-1918 in June of 1916. His residence at the time of his enlistment was 13 Kershaws Hill, Hitchin, Herts.

Following his basic training he served in the United Kingdom as a signaller. In January of 1918 he was sent to France where he performed special wireless intelligence duties. He was demobilized in January of 1919. For his service he was awarded the British War and Victory Medals.
