Dru enlisted in the Royal Engineers for service in the Great War of 1914-1918. He was assigned to the 35th Army Troops Company, R.E. for service in the Middle East. By the end of the war Dru had been promoted to the rank of Acting Sergeant.

The 35th Army Troops Company was assigned to General Headquarters at Gaza on the 26th of March 1917. It took part in the Battles at Gaza on the 17th of April and the 27th of October 1917, and in the action at El Mughar on the 31st of November 1917.

Sergeant Dru survived the war and was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal for his service.
