William Henry Mc Liesh was born in 1896 at Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. His father was James Mc Liesh, a merchant, of 39 High Street in Alloa.

William attended the University of Glasgow from 1914 to 1915 where he studied Zoology, Practical Zoology, and Practical Anatomy in the Medical Faculty. His residence while at the university was c/o Patterson, 294 West Princes Street, Glasgow. While at the University, he received the Second Class Honours Award in Practical Zoology Class.

Mc Leish enlisted in the Royal Engineers for service during the Great War of 1914-1918. He survived the war and was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal for his service.
